Stem Cells for Stunning Skin

Jill Stacey

Stem cells are critical for healthy skin cells. Stem cells contain key growth factors for both repair of damaged skin and rejuvenation of aging skin. They both grow new cells and they produce collagen, elastin, and proteins. In their cell division, millions of new cells can be created for long periods of time.

The Pure Treatment to Make those Eye Bags & Dark Circles Disappear

Eye Bags  & Dark Circles Under Eyes - I cast thee out!

Many of us love that warm fragrant cup of coffee in the morning. I personally don't drink coffee, but I love using it in other powerful health and beauty renewing ways. Today, I'm talking about putting coffee on the body instead of drinking it.

Why would I put coffee on my face? Well, simply put, coffee is a 100 percent pure and natural way to beautify your eyes! It reduces lines and wrinkles and magically deflates eye bags and lightens the dark circles under your eyes.

Dark circles and bags under the eyes are caused by many factors: sinus infection, seasonal allergies, kidney toxicity or stress, excess salt intake, or lack of sleep. As we age, our skin thins and our tiny blood vessels become more visible. The caffeine in coffee soothes inflammation, reducing the puffiness under your delicate eye area and reduces accumulation of blood under your eyes which contributes to dark shadows.

Caffeine is also is vasoconstrictive which helps it to reduce eye puffiness. It increases the microcirculation of blood in the skin which decreases discoloration under the eye. Caffeinated eye cream can reduce the appearance of dark circles caused by leaky blood vessels under the skin, and reveals a bright, youthful appearance.

Not only does coffee have these wonderful anti-inflammatory properties, it is also antioxidant therefore fighting free-radical damage, and reducing signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.

Starlight Eye Cream contains five effective and natural forms of caffeine: caffeine extract, coffee bean Co2, cacao, green tea, and white tea. With a special blend of Brazilian Green Arabica Coffee Bean, Caffeine, Probiotics (Lactobacillus), Cacao (Chocolate), Green Tea, White Tea, Rose Hip, Red Raspberry, Pomegranate, and Orange Blossom, this organic eye cream works synergistically to reduce puffy eyes, dark circles, and wrinkles. Its soft, velvety texture soothes and softens the skin. Gently patting the eye area with your fingertips in circular motions until Starlight Eye Cream is completely massaged in will revitalize, heal, and nourish the delicate area around your eyes for a healthy and bright sparkle!

The Incredible Healing Powers of Ozone for Skin and Oral Care

Jill Stacey

What the heck is Ozone? A place to enjoy things beginning with the letter O?

Ozone (O3) is an element in the atmosphere. It is an activated form of Oxygen which contains three atoms of oxygen rather than the two atoms that Oxygen (O2) contains. The additional atom of oxygen becomes a powerful, highly active element. You can feel ozone after a thunderstorm, near the ocean, or when you're in the mountains at high altitudes. The distinctive scents and feelings you experience in these places help you to recognize the potency of this element. Ozone is created when Oxygen combines with ultraviolet light and electrical discharges. It is present throughout the atmosphere, protecting the Earth by purifying the air and blocking harmful Ultra Violet Rays from the Sun. I. E. The Ozone Layer.

Treatment with Ozone

Ozone has a wide variety of benefits in the proper forms and circumstances. It is not safe to breathe directly, but when infused into other elements, its power can be harnessed in a way that can be immensely beneficial. Ozone produces a multi-faceted and complex effect on the human body. Ozone is Nature’s most powerful anti-microbial, destroying all pathogens, like bacteria, viruses, and fungi, upon contact.

When one uses ozone, only pure oxygen is left behind as the byproduct. Industrially, ozone is used to disinfect water, pools, and medical environments. Ozone is used throughout the world for the alternative medical treatment of serious infection, cancer, and immune disorders via intravenous therapy. It can also be injected into the body to regenerate and heal joints and areas of injury.

Ozone is also a powerful detoxifier (think of the ozone layer purifying our air and making life on Earth safe). Ozone has the capacity to carry plentiful amounts of oxygen into the cells of the body, cleaning out toxic accumulations. I have personally used ozone extensively for my own medical treatment via major and minor autohaemotherapy (when ozone is combined with the patient’s own blood and then is returned to the body via IV or injection), as well as insufflation. I have found it to be incredibly helpful in many ways.

Ozone is highly unstable on its own and when produced will only last for about 20 minutes in the air. But, when combined with blood for medical treatment or when infused over a long period of time into certain oils, it can be stabilized and utilized safely and beneficially. We can use certain types of oils to stabilize this highly unstable element in a safe and beneficial way.

Ozonated Oils for Skin

To create Elaa’s ozonated oils, cold pressed extra virgin organic olive oil goes through an extended process where ozone is bubbled through it. The process of fully infusing the oil with ozone takes many weeks. Once fully ozonated, the oil becomes a very thick and solid gel. Rare, special, and uniquely healing therapeutic essential oils are combined with the fully ozonated oil to dramatically enhance the healing properties of the ozonated oil. These essential oils also contribute additional healing and rejuvenating properties that make Elaa’s ozonated products for skin and oral care incredibly powerful and encouraging of overall optimum health.

With its amazing ability to address pathogens and toxins, ozone is phenomenal for treating skin conditions. When applied to the skin, After the Rain – Activated Oxygen Miracle Balm carries ozone’s powerful properties through the cells. It heals damaged tissues, cleanses and disinfects, and stimulates rapid healing. After the Rain stimulates the growth of new healthy skin cells, and improves microcirculation. Dry skin will be moisturized, and swelling and inflammation will be calmed. After the Rain – Activated Oxygen Miracle Balm is superb for Acne, Rosacea, and Eczema. It also has a powerful affect for rejuvenating aging skin. After the Rain’s anti-aging benefits include: stimulation of cell growth and proliferation, free radical scavenging of harmful toxins, moisturizing facial conditioning. It repairs skin cells, boosts skin immunity, and improves skin structure.

Other healing benefits and uses for After the Rain – Activated Oxygen Miracle Balm include:

Diaper Rash

That's a lot of healing power! Let's knock out those critters and skin calamities!

“Ozone is widely recognized as one of the best bactericidal, antiviral and antifungal agents and therefore it is employed as ozonated olive oil. The ozonated oil is now used topically for the treatment of war wounds, anaerobic infections, herpetic infections (HHV I and II), trophic ulcers and burns, cellulitis, abscesses, anal fissures, decubitus ulcers (bed sores), fistulae, fungal diseases, furunculosis, gingivitis and vulvovaginitis. Matsumoto et al. tested the efficacy of the ozonated oil in the treatment of fistulae and chronic surgical wounds and, in a series of 28 patients, the ozonated oil was fully effective in 27 cases without side-effects. Even radiodermatitis lesions in patients with cancer have been found to be beneficially influenced by exposure to ozonated oil.” [1]

Ozonated Oral Care

Ozone is also widely used by dentists to sanitize and clean the mouth and prevent infection before and after surgery or dental procedures. It also is restorative and healing for the teeth and gums, just as it is for skin. Fresh Breeze - Ozonated Oral Care Gel deeply stimulates every cell and gland in the mouth. It creates an accelerated process of cleansing and healing. It soothes pain, and inflammations are quickly soothed. Fresh Breeze - Ozonated Oral Care Gel also helps to clear toxins from the mouth and body, thus promoting systemic body health.

Melasma and Hyperpigmentation - Caring, Natural, and Effective Treatment

Jill Stacey

Melasma, and all types of hyperpigmentation and skin discoloration, can be big challenges to deal with. Sadly, many people become self-conscious of their skin (whatever the issue may be), and even feel embarrassment when going out in public. I also had melasma on my face after a swift hormonal shift. It bothered me for years, until I figured out what to do and it faded away. What helped me was to do everything I could to treat naturally and with love both externally and internally.

Rather than feeling that you have hide or disguise yourself, love yourself and your skin. You are beautiful all-ways, and deep acceptance of yourself in the present moment will help you live true to your essence and with love and grace. We can also actively work to heal and transform melasma and hyperpigmentation with internal, topical and lifestyle adjustments. With a little knowledge and effort, melasma can be healed, we will have learned a lot in the process. Read on to learn about the common skin condition known as melasma, and how to correct the imbalance.

what is melasma?

Melasma is a type of skin hyperpigmentation that causes discoloration over parts of the face. Commonly affected areas are the forehead, cheeks and upper lip. It is very common, affecting around 6 million people in the U.S. alone. About 90% of the people who experience melasma are women.

causes of melasma

There are many causative factors that can trigger melasma, including shifts in hormonal balance, high stress levels, excess melanin production, high toxic load in the body, and troubles with thyroid function. Many people think that melasma is caused by overexposure to the sun, but this isn't actually true. Sun may accentuate melasma, darkening the hyperpigmentation, but is not the root of the problem.

hormonal imbalance

The reason melasma is so much more common in women than men is because of the regular hormonal fluctuations that women experience. When a woman's hormones are balanced, everything functions more smoothly in her life. If any imbalances occur in her body, her hormones will most certainly be affected. And when the hormonal balance is off, we start to notice other things tipping out of balance as well. Commonly, the skin will signal to us a hormonal imbalance.

melasma and hormones

Estrogen-dominance is a common occurrence these days for women. When the progesterone level is too low, estrogen will dominate and cause all sorts of unpleasant effects. Slipping into a state of too much estrogen is not unusual at all in our modern day world, with the rise of xenoestrogenic materials and pollutants in our environment. Our bodies are sensitive, and our hormones can easily get out of balance.

Pregnancy is also a time of major hormonal shifts, which is why melasma will oftentimes show up. As a matter of fact, melasma has been termed the "pregnancy mask." Many women experience this hyperpigmentation during and after pregnancy.

In addition, the use of birth control pills and HRT can trigger melasma. Again, this is due to the hormonal balance being pushed in the direction of estrogen dominance.

hyperpigmentation and skin discoloration

So what's one to do once they are experiencing the hyperpigmentation and skin discoloration associated with melasma? I recommend taking a multi-directional approach. By combining lifestyle, internal and topical treatments, you will succeed and soar as you heal this skin condition.

melasma treatment - internal

The first step is to figure out what sort of internal imbalance you are dealing with, if you don't know already. Work with a health practitioner whom you trust and feel confident in. If hormonal imbalance is suspected, get the appropriate lab tests to find out exactly where you are at. This will help you develop a treatment plan, as well as monitor progress as you undergo treatment. You may also want to have your thyroid and adrenal functions assessed.

melasma treatment - topical

As you are working through the internal imbalances, you can expedite the external healing process by incorporating an effective, targeted treatment into your protocol. Elaa is honored to be able to offer an extraordinary formulation to those who are healing melasma. Sunshine Dew Brightening Vitamin C Serum is a natural hyperpigmentation treatment that's highly potent and concentrated, for use in the most stubborn cases of melasma, hyperpigmentation, or uneven skin tone.

As with all of elaa's product offerings, you will find only the highest quality and most effective targeted ingredients in Sunshine Dew Brightening Vitamin C Serum It is highly anti-inflammatory, and significantly inhibits the the activity of tyrosinase and melanin production. It heals and restores skin to its most beautiful expression.

melasma treatment - lifestyle

Finally, take a deep look at your overall lifestyle patterns. Remember that stress is a trigger for melasma. Stress actually plays a big role in all of our imbalances, including our hormonal balance and adrenal health. Its no mystery that living in our world can feel more than a little overwhelming sometimes. Find ways to nourish yourself by taking the time to make healthy dietary and lifestyle choices. Make a point to consciously relax when you are feeling stressed. Take the time to practice meditation, however this might look for you. Maybe it's being in nature, laughing out loud, or dancing your heart out.

The Benefits of Ozone for Optimum Skin Health

Jill Stacey

What is ozone?

Ozone or O3 is Activated Oxygen (O2). Ozone contains three atoms of oxygen rather than the two atoms that Oxygen contains. The additional atom of oxygen becomes a powerful, highly active element.  You can catch a feel of the power of ozone after a thunderstorm, near the ocean, and when you're up in the mountains at high altitudes. The distinctive scents and feelings you experience in these places provide clues about activated oxygen.

When oxygen combines with UV rays from the sun, Ozone is also created. Ozone protects the Earth by attaching to pollutants and purifying the air we breathe. It is used to disinfect water, pools, and medical environments. It is a powerful element that has a wide variety of benefits in the proper forms and circumstances. It is is common misperception that ozone is created from air pollution. Rather, the Ozone layer in the atmosphere shields the Earth from the harmful UV rays of the sun and keeps the Earth warm. Pollution causes destruction of the Ozone layer. Pollution creates holes in the Ozone Layer, which allow harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun to reach the Earth's surface. Ozone is not safe to breathe, as it’s irritating to our lungs. But, when infused into our blood in an IV or into oil, it becomes an incredibly powerful and safe healer.

Ozone Therapy

Ozone destroys pathogens, like bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Only pure oxygen is left behind as the byproduct. Ozone is a potent and powerful detoxifyer (think of the ozone layer purifying our air and making life on Earth possible). With its ability to tackle such things, ozone stabilized in the right form is a tremendous ally for treating serious skin problems as well.

Natural Detoxification

Ozone is our environment's go-to miracle worker for cleansing. Because it contains a third oxygen molecule, it is heavier than oxygen (O2). Its because of this extra weight that ozone is able to move through the air and clean it up. It takes care of pollutants of all kinds, and also handles bacteria and viruses in its path. However, it its unstabilized form, ozone can only last for about 20 minutes.

Ozone is an excellent therapy for detoxification, and fortunately there are methods that can be used to safely and effectively stabilize it. Ozone has the capacity to carry plentiful amounts of oxygen into the cells of the body, pushing out toxic accumulations and infections.

Ozonated Oils

We can use certain types of oils to stabilize a highly unstable element in a safe and beneficial way. For Elaa's products, the process starts with raw, cold pressed organic olive oil. The oil goes through an extended process where ozone is bubbled through it. The process of fully infusing the oil with ozone takes weeks to months. Once fully ozonated, the oil becomes a very thick gel. It is solid and will not flow like an oil. To retain purity and potency, the oil never comes into contact with any metal or plastic.

Skin & Ozone

When applied to the skin, ozonated oils carry their powerful properties through the cells. The oil heals damaged tissues and speeds up healing time. It works to clear bacteria (very beneficial on acne), viral and fungal infections. Ozonated olive oil stimulates the growth of new healthy skin cells. Dry skin will be moisturized, and swelling and inflammations will be calmed. Skin rashes of all types benefit from the application of properly ozonated oil.

Powerful anti-aging benefits:

  • Stimulation of growth for skin cells

  • Acts as a free radical scavenger on harmful toxins

  • Acts as a moisturizing facial conditioner

  • Cellulite Reduction

  • Wrinkles

Other healing benefits and uses include:

  • Sunburns and other burns

  • Wounds, cuts, ulcers

  • Insect bites and stings

  • Cleans and sterilizes the epidermis

  • Reduces swelling and redness

  • Calms the nerves and reduces the amount of pain in skin conditions

  • May increase cellular function and cellular memory

  • Aids in healing processes and reduces scarring

  • Good for animal wounds - it can be licked

  • Can be used as a natural under arm deodorant

  • Hemorrhoids – One of the best natural remedies

  • Sore muscles (helps to remove lactic acid from pores)

Spring Re-boot: Blossom this Spring with Organic Skin Care and Cleansing Rituals

Jill Stacey

I love the Spring! The sun is shining more each day, the birds singing their sweet melodies, trees are budding and flowers blooming. It's truly a time to revel in the magic of life and beauty of new beginnings. Today we remind ourselves of harmonizing with the changing of the seasons. . . and radiating from the inside out!

spring cleaning

Pretty much everyone gets inspired to do a little extra dusting and polishing around the house when Spring arrives. It seems like the perfect time to clear out and clean out, and the same goes for our inner terrain. Spring is an excellent time to tune in to the body's natural rhythms, and assist and support our temple as it opens itself to its own new beginnings.

cleansing tips

You can approach cleansing from many perspectives: physical, emotional, spiritual. . . Wherever you start, your efforts and energy will carry over to all parts of life. Cleansing is a tremendous way to open yourself up to the life that you are here to live. Lifting burdens, in whatever form they may take, reminds you of your true nature.

cleansing diet

Its a great idea to pay attention to what's available locally when making your food choices. Spring is an exciting time to shop for produce, with all sorts of beautiful offerings becoming available. Look for spinach, dandelion greens, peas, parsley, fennel, watercress and asparagus. Simple raw salads and juices are a wonderful way to incorporate these fresh and flavorful foods into the diet. Warm brothy soups with plenty of tender veggies help hydrate and nourish your cells.

juice cleanse

Feeling inspired to take it a step further? How about a juice cleanse? There are all sorts of approaches here, but low-glycemic green juices are my go-to. A juice cleanse can mean different things to different people at different times and phases of life. It might mean making the commitment to drink a pint of juice every day, in addition to a healthy whole-foods diet. Or, you might decide to abstain from solid foods for a period of time and just nourish, cleanse and detoxify with juices. Both of these have their own distinct benefits, and your choice to juice cleanse is totally personal and relative to your body's present needs.

detox bath

Its important to be consciously gentle with ourselves during times of transition. With the changing of the seasons, we might notice that our bodies are feeling a little bit sensitive. Spending quiet time with ourselves, nurturing and relaxing, assists the process. Beautiful warm baths early in the morning or in the evening time are a perfect way to do this. There are plenty of options for healing additions that can be placed in the water. Epsom salts will give you a nice boost of magnesium, which will deepen your relaxation and also support pretty much every process in the body. You might also choose to use another favorite salt, such as mineral rich Celtic Sea salt, Himalayan salt, or Dead Sea salt. Also consider adding a few drops of your favorite therapeutic grade essential oils to heighten the experience.

The Benefits of Vitamin C - Glowing Skin and Immune Health (and why many vitamin C serums are toxic)

Jill Stacey

Vitamin C naturally begins to diminish in the skin over time. Using it in a topical application can work wonders in promoting and enhancing the quality and radiance of your skin.

Skincare products formulated with Vitamin C are making huge gains in popularity these days. With so many potential benefits from the topical use of this powerful antioxidant, it's easy to understand why! However, it is important to make a distinction between the many different forms of this vitamin being used in it does actually come in many forms...sometimes synthetic and sometimes natural.

Much of the Vitamin C being used in topical products can actually cause damage to the skin...

Wow...this is huge! Take a moment to really soak that in because the implications here are important..particularly if you use skincare products containing Vitamin C. Unfortunately, it is true that the majority of Vitamin C products being marketed are actually having the very opposite effect on user's skin than intended/marketed. Vitamin C in many forms will cause damage to the skin when used topically. And, the vast majority of Vitamin C skincare products are formulated with damaging forms of this vitamin.

Let's take a step back here before we dive into all of this, and remind ourselves of the beauty and benefits of Vitamin C (in its proper form). . . That is, after all, why we are shedding light on this issue. We understand the pure potential for this beauty care ingredient, and wish for it to be utilized without causing harm.

benefits of vitamin c

When we take in adequate amounts of Vitamin C, we reap astounding benefits. There are volumes that have been written on this, but let's just mention a few highlights.

Vitamin C is highly recognized in its ability to support the immune system, along with the health of the adrenal glands. This could be why adequate levels of this vitamin are associated with reduced levels of stress and an overall greater sense of wellbeing. Vitamin C intake is crucial for cellular health and support, and it is also a key player in the production of glutathione within the body (think detoxification in a toxic world).

When it comes to the health of the skin, Vitamin C plays a big role in its maintenance and repair.

vitamin c for skin

Vitamin C is an important nutrient for the health of our skin, and our body's largest organ can benefit from its use both internally and externally.

One of the key reasons that it is so useful as an anti-aging ingredient is that it greatly assists in the production of collagen. As you amp up this process in the skin, fine lines and wrinkles will oftentimes diminish. Collagen is a powerful rejuvenator to the skin, and by applying Vitamin C topically, you are directing the production of collagen to specified areas of the body. Healthy collagen levels equate to healthy blood vessel structure, which then enables needed nutrients to make it to the furthest reaches of your tissues. It is a beautiful process, and Vitamin C is a major player in its graceful unfolding.

Being a dynamic antioxidant, Vitamin C also has the ability to protect the skin from free radicals and UV radiation. In addition, it protects against skin discoloration, and also lightens pigmentations such as age spots and freckles. Vitamin C is one of the first responders when there is a wound to be healed, helping to repair damaged tissues at an expedited pace. brainer here...Vitamin C is amazing, and any way that we can strategically invite healthy forms of it into our tissues is to be encouraged.... and most definitely appreciated by the body....

So what was that about healthy forms of Vitamin C? Isn't Vitamin C just, Vitamin C?

Well, not exactly. In a perfect world maybe, but things have gotten a little complicated....

sources of vitamin c

acerola cherries

acerola cherries

There are several foods that contain Vitamin C. The highest amounts are found in Kakadu Plum, Acerola Cherry, Camu Camu Berry, and Indian Gooseberry or Amla berry. Citrus fruits are also famously known for containing Vitamin C, although in lower amounts than the previously mentioned fruits. When you go to purchase a Vitamin C supplement or skin care product, you could be receiving any number of versions of the vitamin. Some are natural, many are synthetic. Some of the names you might see on a label include l-ascorbic acid, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, sodium ascorbate, ascorbyl palmitate, and ester C (magnesium ascorbyl phosphate).

The most commonly used source of Vitamin C in skin care applications is Ascorbic Acid, or L-Ascorbic Acid.

ascorbic acid

This type of vitamin C can be synthetic or naturally derived. Of course, we want to avoid synthetics. On the other hand, if its plant-sourced, there's a strong probability that its a corn derivative - and unless specified, GMO...i.e. avoid at all costs. (However, there are a handful of reputable manufacturers producing certified non-GMO Ascorbic Acid).

The trouble with L-Ascorbic Acid in this isolated form, even when from a non-GMO natural-source, is that its not easy to stabilize. This is true for all Ascorbic Acid, whether its synthetic or natural. It oxidizes quickly when added to a formula. A common solution to this problem by skin care manufacturers is to use a chemical stabilization process, which presents an entirely new set of problems in terms of healthy skin care.

Between the rapid oxidation of L-Ascorbic Acid in skincare formulations, and the chemical stabilizers that may or may not be used to address this issue, there are a lot of undesirable things going on with the vast majority of Vitamin C skin care products.

diy vitamin c serum

DIY Vitamin C serums are enjoying a streak of popularity. If you decide to go this route, be sure to do your research to ensure you are not using harmful substances on your skin. If you decide on using L-Ascorbic Acid, make sure that it is from a non-GMO plant source, and that you make only enough serum for a single use (as the Vitamin C will begin oxidizing as soon as you mix it into the serum). Be sure to do a skin test to make sure this agrees with your skin, as too high of a concentration can cause a serious reaction.

best form of vitamin c

The best form of Vitamin C, taken internally or used topically in skincare, is in its whole food form. If you are going to use an extracted form, look for L-Ascorbic Acid from as pure as source as possible, and non-GMO. Again, look for powder or capsules of Kakadu Plum, Acerola Cherry, Camu Camu Berry, and Indian Gooseberry or Amla berry. And eat citrus fruits.

Indian Gooseberries or Amla Berries

The Power and Beauty of Superfoods For Skin

Jill Stacey

Potent Nutrients for Radiant Skin

Today, we are fortunate to have access to an amazing abundance of incredible health and beauty resources. Nutrition is a huge piece of my approach to a healthy and joyful life, as well as beautiful, healthy skin.

I'd like to share with you a little bit about a few of my favorite nutritional health and beauty allies: superfoods. So, what exactly makes any particular food super?....

Superfoods really shine because of their vast array of special nutritional contents. They are concentrated sources of a large number of special compounds, which could include ample amounts of essential vitamins, minerals or other unique bioactive components, like adaptogens, for example. They have a lot to offer our bodies, minds, and spirits, each with their own specialty and area of focus.

Nutrition for skin

One of the best ways to promote healthy skin is through nutritional intake. There are a lot of factors that go into a glowing complexion, but you can never go wrong with making healthy food choices: this is your strong foundation to build upon. With so much depletion in our soils, and in turn, our food supply (unless you are consciously growing your own food or buying from farmers who are), it is important to pay extra attention to ensure you are getting enough vital nutrients into your body. Superfoods are a great way to do this.

Superfoods For Skin

Here's a list of 6 of my favorite superfoods, which tremendously benefit the skin both externally and internally.

Goji Berry

Goji berries are classified as a yin jing herb in traditional Chinese medicine, cultivating astounding balance and strength in the body. Goji is highly notable in its kidney tonifying and anti-aging effects.

Nutritionally, Goji berries provide exceptionally high levels of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and micronutrients. Their energy is palpable when eaten in a small amount. Some easy ways to add them into the diet is by putting them in teas, smoothies, trail mixes or just eaten alone as a delicious snack.

Used topically in skincare, Goji berries provide the same concentrated nutrients that they do when eaten. Just as they revitalize the body through diet, they revitalize the skin...both through their internal and external applications. Goji is known to smooth the skin and even out its tone, and one of the most efficient ways to experience its skin tonifying effects is topically.

Noni fruit

Noni fruit is a miracle worker to the functioning of the immune system, and also works to strengthen all systems of the body in a deep and nourishing way. Noni is known to modulate the immune system, meaning that it assists the body to adapt its function in both cases of over and under-activity. For example, it is safe and beneficial to take if you have come down with an acute illness, such as a cold or flu (depressed immune system), or in the case of seasonal allergies (hyperactive immune response).

In addition, Noni fruit is said to fortify and maintain cell structure, which has implications for its benefits both internally and externally. It also encourages detoxification, assists in liver cleansing, and beautifies the skin. Noni is anti-inflammatory and histamine-inhibiting, making it a wonderful tool when treating certain skin conditions.

Pomegranate, which includes the sweet-tart fleshy outer layer that is loved by many, is a beautiful superfood. They are a rich source of vitamins C and K. Consumption and topical use of pomegranate seed and its extracts support the immune system, and has tremendous positive impacts on the surface of the skin.

Pomegranate is a powerhouse when it comes to topical skincare applications. It's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties help to regenerate skin cells, repair skin and accelerate healing, increase skin circulation, reduce hyperpigmentation and age spots, protect from sun damage, heal acne, eczema, and other skin conditions, and reduce scarring. Pomegranate promotes collagen and elastin production and thus aids in wrinkle prevention and reduction, and helps to firm skin.  It is rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and omega fatty acids. The polyphenol antioxidants it contains are anthocyanins (like Hibiscus), Tannins, and the very special Punicic Acid (omega 5 fatty acid) and Ellagic Acid, which all help to soothe, hydrate, and soften skin.

Finally, pomegranate stimulates keratinocytes, which are a type of cells found in the outer layer of the skin. Through its targeted regenerating action, pomegranate seed reverses skin damage and encourages dramatic renewal.

Royal Jelly

Royal Jelly is the food created by honey bees that makes a bee into a Queen Bee. It is a concentrated source of body loving and beauty promoting vitamins and minerals. It contains 17 amino acids, supportive levels of calcium and iron, many B-vitamins, as well as vitamins A, C, and E. Royal Jelly's super concentrated nutritional content is nectar for the complexion.

Rich in collagen-boosting silicon, flavonoids, nucleic acid, decnoic acid, enzymes, B-vitamins, and zinc, Royal Jelly is a powerfully effective skin regenerator when applied topically. It also contains a protein that has been termed "royalisin" which demonstrates strong antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, useful in cases of acne and inflammations.

It is hard to deny the joyous feeling that a little chocolate treat can bring. Cacao is the name for chocolate in it's raw, unprocessed form. The flavor and feel are described by many to be perfectly divine. Not only does chocolate bring joy to your heart in the feeling sense, but it has also been discovered to benefit the entire cardiovascular system. Cacao contains certain bioactives that influence our neurotransmitters, making it useful as a mood modulator and booster of cognitive function.

Cacao is also said to boost immunity and assist in the treatment of allergic conditions. It is being shown to help restore glutathione levels in the body.

In skincare applications, cacao's rich antioxidant flavonoid content helps to protect the skin from environmental and UV damage, as well as reduce and prevent aging. It improves skin texture and hydration. Cacao also aids with increased blood flow and cell function. It feels and smells amazing on the skin, making it a perfect companion in skincare rituals.

Chaga mushroom is a powerful gift from the forest. It delivers a powerful dose of antioxidants, amino acids, minerals, and SOD enzymes. Chaga regenerates and protects the cells of the body. It oxygenates and builds strong blood, along with stabilizing blood sugar and acting as a potent anti-inflammatory. Chaga increases the body's core energy while decreasing tension and stress. Chana's benefits are so far reaching, that it is worth looking into to further your own wealth of knowledge. It is truly something special, and seems to have something powerful to offer everyone.

As it greatly assists in cellular repair and encourages the growth of healthy cells, Chaga is great for the skin. It is very rich in melanin, which nourishes your skin cells, restores their natural pigment, and even aids in DNA repair. Chaga is an amazing support in the detoxification of the entire body, and encourages a notable glow in the skin.

Honey Face Mask: A Sweet Way to Nourish the Skin

Jill Stacey

Today I'm going to share a little about one of nature's most miraculous substances...honey!... and how you can incorporate it into your beauty rituals. We'll look at super simple ways to create a facial at home, so you can begin experiencing the magic of one of nature's sweetest offerings.

Different Types of Honey

If you've ever shopped for honey in a grocery store, you might have noticed that there are typically several varieties available. If you attend your local farmers' market, your choices are likely greatly expanded. I remember when I first went to Hawaii, moving through a farmers' market I came upon a honey vendor. His table was filled with so many varieties of honey, unlike anything I had ever experienced before. The flavors, colors and properties were all so unique and potent...I am still in awe as I think about it...

There are more potential honey varietals than there are plants in the world! The possibilities are only limited by the health and creativity of our bee allies...

Manuka Honey

When I moved to New Zealand for a time, I was in for a whole new world of honeys. One of the most notable nectars to come from this special place is the extraordinary Manuka honey. It has gained lots of recognition in recent years for its many health benefits. Included amongst these healing properties: it is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory... which makes it incredibly beneficial to all sorts of common skin complaints. Being super rich in all sorts of minerals and plant actives, Manuka honey is amazing for the skin in all of its phases.

Raw Honey

Whether you are consuming honey internally or applying externally, it is extremely important to choose only raw varieties. Honey is precious and fragile, and must be harvested and handled with care in order to retain its potent benefits. In addition, always be certain that your honey is sourced from a clean and pristine environment.

Honey Face Mask

Honey makes a sweet treat for the skin, and one of the simplest methods of application is through the use of a mask. If you want to go super simple, you can start by gently splashing warm water on your face in the morning. After a quick pat dry, rub some favorite honey all over your face. Start with a small a amount, and softly rub in circular motions until you've reached all areas. Allow the honey to remain on the skin for about 20 minutes, or up to an hour. Rinse well, splash with cool water, and follow with toner and moisturizer if you choose.

If you'd like to take the process a step further, you can create your own homemade facial with honey as a featured ingredient. A honey face mask will bring many nutrients to your skin, and pamper you pleasantly. Here's an easy and soothing recipe for you to experiment with at home...

*1 T raw honey

*1 tsp fresh aloe vera gel

*2 T finely ground oats

Combine ingredients in a bowl, or for best results, use a mini blender (such as a spice grinder or bullet style blender). Apply to skin and soak up the love for 20-30 minutes. Rinse and feel refreshed!

Winter Beauty Tips - Self-Care for Your Whole Being

Jill Stacey

Winter Solstice has come and passed in the northern hemisphere, and each day we are seeing a little more light. Yet, we still have more days of winter to come. There are some strategies that can be adopted to ensure that we cherish the experience of winter to the fullest! Today we will look at ways to keep ourselves feeling healthy, cozy, and beautiful through the winter season.

Eating with the Seasons

Over the past 50 years, the availability and diversity of foods available to us at grocery stores have changed dramatically. With food now being imported from every possible corner of the globe, many have fallen out of touch with the fact that certain foods can only be grown in certain climates, are only available seasonally, etc. If grapes were to be purchased in California during the month of March, the informed shopper would be aware that they were not grown locally. This brings us to a key point: eating food in season, and grown as close to home as possible, will bring your body the greatest health benefits.

Mother nature knows best, always! She offers us apples in the fall and dandelion greens in the spring with good reason. Nourishing roots grown deep in the ground provide us with tailored nutrients that our bodies crave and thrive on during the fall and winter, and as the weather warms up, we are attracted to the lighter side of things, flourishing on vividly colored foods with higher water contents.

The method of your food preparation might also shift in the wintertime. Some find that they are more balanced by adding in more cooked foods, depending on their own body and geographic location. Soups made with lovingly prepared broths, plenty of veggies, and warming spices might be just what you need to warm up on a chilly day. Healthy fats will help keep you in balance, inside and out (assisting in keeping the skin soft and moisturized). Hot teas made with immune-supporting herbs are also an excellent ally to prepare and consume daily in the winter.

Super Supplements

Everyone has different supplemental needs, but there are a few common threads that we can all benefit from during this time of year. Be sure to get plenty of good fats in your diet, such as the super important omega oils (in their proper ratios). Also, with less sunlight, consider getting your vitamin D level checked. This is a common deficiency, even if you spend a lot of time in the sun. When supplementing, look for this vitamin in the form of D3 (as Cholecalciferol) for the greatest support. Include plenty of supportive herbs in the form of extracts and teas. Look into herbs such as medicinal mushrooms (including Reishi, Chaga, Cordyceps and Argaricus Blazei), Siberian Ginseng, Ashwaganda, and Astragalus to support and balance your body and spirit.

Benefits of Exercise

Its easy to go into hibernation mode when its cold outside, but we can still find ways to move our bodies and break a sweat. Movement and sweating are really great for us, and most definitely support our body's immune system and natural cleansing processes.

Find ways to get your body in motion...whatever feels good and works for you. This might include activities such as stretching, walking, jogging, dancing...or get bouncing on your rebounder if you've got one!

Far Infrared Sauna

Breaking a sweat is also a wonderful way to support your physical body. A vigorous run will do it, but there are also other options, like enjoying a sauna regularly. Check out Far Infrared (FIR) Saunas if you've never done so before...they are an amazing way to induce sweating and encourage deep cleansing. Following the sauna with a cold plunge or cold rinse in the shower (hot/cold therapy) provides incredible benefits to your entire being, with special emphasis on lymphatic drainage, circulation, detoxification, and immunity.

This sort of circulation stimulation can also be achieved through a hydrotherapy shower. You simply rotate between hot and cold water while in the shower, making sure to reach every part of your body. If there is an area that is particularly sensitive or congested (such as swollen lymph nodes, stuffy sinuses, or sensitive kidneys, for example), be sure to pay special attention to that part of the body. Ideally you want to be in a hydrotherapy shower for about 15 minutes, so moving through seven rotations of hot/cold (keep the hot water on for 1 minute, then completely cold for 1 minute, repeat) works out perfectly. You will feel absolutely invigorated and refreshed once you have finished!

Spa Ritual

Most everyone spends more time indoors during the winter. What a perfect opportunity to practice self-care and spend some quality time with oneself! How about turning the bathroom into your own spa, where you can encourage and inspire your spirit with an ever-evolving self-care ritual. . .

Homemade Bath Soak

Baths are always my go-to number one choice if I'm in need of relaxation, nourishment, or detox. Before you get into the water, try a little dry skin brushing to stimulate the lymphatic flow in your body. Using a body scrub, like Elaa's Pumpkin Pie Body Scrub will also stimulate circulation, drainage, with the added benefit of exfoliating your skin and leaving it silky soft. You might also add some special essential oils to the tub, such as Elaa's WINTER REJUVENATION BLEND as a method to nourish your skin and calm your spirit. I also always include things like Epsom Salts, Mineral Salts, Clays, and Baking Soda for detoxification. Follow the bath with your choice of nourishing, Skin Restoring Body Oils or Body Butters.

Foot Bath

If you aren't in the mood to fully submerge, a foot bath is a brilliant option. This gives you the chance to direct some special attention to your precious feet. The feet are a major path of elimination for the body - toxins can be drawn out through the feet quite easily. Consider a moisturizing essential oil blend, clay for detoxification, or Epsom Salts (rich in magnesium) for relaxation and immune support. Follow your foot bath with a rich body butter to deeply restore and seal in extra moisture. Elaa's delectable Skin Restoring, Age Defying Body Butters are the perfect treatments for feet and hand beauty and softness.

At Home Facial

Loving Home Facials are something that I highly support and encourage! They are a great way to tune into your body's needs and create a luminous glow, while taking time to cherish yourself. For amazing customizable home facial options, check out Elaa's CLEANSERS, EXFOLIANTS, and MASKS. Finish these fun and gorgeous treatments with TONER, SERUM, TREATMENT, and MOISTURIZER of your choice. I also invite and encourage you to read over past blog articles, where common skin complaints are addressed, along with many tips for facials!

Skin Care Routine

If you are interested in trying out some of Elaa's product offerings for the first time, a good way to go is the SAMPLE PACK, where you can select from a variety of different options suited to your own skin and desires. The Oil Cleansing Method: Inspiring Skin Balance and Radiance

Jill Stacey

Our skin has many functions, including protecting our precious inner-terrain and acting as a powerful organ of elimination. Our skin also acts as a messenger of our overall health, providing us with clues about what may be going on inside the body. It is most certainly something to be treasured and taken care of.

Healthy Skin

What if there was a simple method that could be used to balance and rejuvenate all skin types in all stages? A foundation to build and refine a customized skincare ritual from and something that could be equally beneficially to those with dry skin or oily skin? Or combination skin? And even sensitive or inflamed skin? Great news! You might be on the brink of discovering something big here, something that could fundamentally shift the way you skin has been behaving....into a state of perfect balance.

You might have heard of the Oil Cleansing Method before. People who have tried it and stuck with it generally have good things to say about it, really good things, and want to share the information they've learned. I've been using this method for many years and it has revolutionized my skin. Today we're going to take a look at the Oil Cleansing Method to a healthy skincare routine, and maybe you will be inspired to give it a try!

Skin Structure and Function

Image by Daniel de Souza Telles

Let's start with the basics of skin structure, to help us understand just a little bit about what might be going on with our skin and how Oil Cleansing may be helpful. There are three main layers, the outermost being the one we are most familiar with. Here's a little breakdown:

This outermost layer is called the epidermis, and serves to protect us from the external environment. It not only keeps harmful substances out of our bodies, but also assists in the removal of them from inside our bodies as they are carried out through our pores. It is in this top layer that you will also find melanocytes, which are the cells that contain melanin (the pigments that determine our skin color).

Dermis of the Skin

The next layer is known as the dermis, which is where sweat glands, sebaceous glands, and hair follicles are found. This layer is made up of a variety of proteins, collagen, and elastin. This is an important layer in terms of nourishing and supporting for a beautiful glow, and also to consider when decongesting skin from harmful substances (which can play a part in breakouts and other imbalances). In the dermis you will also find an intricate network of capillaries carrying oxygen and nutrients to the cells.

Skin Deep

The subcutis is the innermost layer of the skin. It serves to insulate, shield and protect.

Function of Skin

We have talked about skin's abilities to protect us from the outside world and allow a safe passage for the removal of toxins from our system. It is also responsible for overall moisture retention, regulating our temperature, and producing Vitamin D. In short, the skin is super important to our health on a lot of levels. Now that we have got the basics on skin structure and function down, let's get back to the Oil Cleansing Method and why it works so well....

The Oil Cleansing Method

Applying oil to the skin, particularly when it already seems over-oily, is counter-intuitive for a lot of people. What many people are not yet aware of is this simple truth: oil dissolves oil. When you use the oil cleansing method, all of the impurities that are clogging your pores will be softened and dissolved, and with the application of steam or a warm compress, will be removed altogether. Oil is healthy and necessary for the skin, which is why your body produces it. It lubricates pores so they can carry out toxins with ease, and also works to provide moisture and protection. The production and movement of oil within the skin is a beautiful process, and when it is in balance, the skin is radiant. Trouble arises when the process breaks down somewhere along the way, and suddenly things aren't flowing as easily as they should be. Oil cleansing is the method that can assist in bringing this back into balance, no matter if you skin is oily, dry, or somewhere in between.

The Oil Cleansing Method: How to Get Rid of Oily Skin and Acne

At this point, we have learned that oily skin needs oil just as much as dry skin does. It is healthy and healing, and will encourage and bring about oil balance in the skin. The Oil Cleansing Method will greatly assist in the removal of pore-clogging substances, and encourage balance and vitality in the skin, clearing acne and oily skin. If you have been stuck in the trap of using products that overly dry the skin (such as oil-absorbing products or medicated acne treatments), it is time to break free! When you use products that intentionally aim to dry the tissues, the skin will overcompensate and produce even more oil...leading to the continuation of the cycle of oily skin, clogged pores and acne. It's time for a change. . . invite oil into your life!

The Oil Cleansing Method: Bringing Moisture to Dry Skin

Dry skin benefits greatly from the Oil Cleansing Method as well. It will not only clear congested pores, but it will also invite healthy oils into the skin to work their magic. The oils that we will be using are miracle workers in the tissues, clearing inflammations, signs of aging, and restoring deep balance and beauty. Your skin will be thrilled with the results, and the simplicity of the practice makes it refreshingly easy to do.

Oil Cleansing with Orange Sky Facial Cleansing Balm

I have just released Elaa's newest treasure, a sensuous beauty balm made for the best, most effective, and divinely enjoyable oil cleansing. With a special combination of herbs, oils, butters, and essential oils, Orange Sky Facial Cleansing Balm works to swiftly transform the upper two layers of the skin into harmonized balance. In addition to its skin balancing, nourishing, and rejuvenating effects, it also works to balance the spirit with its uplifting therapeutic essential oils. Orange Sky Facial Cleansing Balm is the foundation for a truly transformational skincare routine.

How To - The Oil Cleansing Method

*1* Begin with a pearl sized amount of Orange Sky - Facial Cleansing Balm in your hand.

*2* You may begin on the neck and gently stroke in upwards motions toward the forehead until you have covered your entire face. Begin to gently massage the cleansing balm in delicate circular motions, taking care to ensure that it has completely penetrated the skin. Allow the cleansing balm to work its magic on your tissues for at least 3 minutes, or up to ten minutes if desired. Take this time to soak in the experience, breathing deeply and opening to transformation. Invite in your own self healing power of your body, mind, and spirit in, and both feel in your heart and form a clear picture in your mind of radiant health and beauty.

*3* Use a warm damp cloth to remove, sweeping in upward motions.

*4* If you have a lot of congestion in the skin, and/or you are in the initial clearing phase of the oil cleansing method, there is an extra step you might consider employing. (This will become unnecessary after your skin balances with continued use of the method). Position your face over a pot of gently steaming water, with towel draped over the back of your head to hold the steam in and allow it to work through your pores. Continue to steam for about 5 minutes. Follow with a cool splash of water.

*5* Finish the ritual with a toner, like Moonlight Mist. The toner will help remove any excess wax or oil from the cleansing balm. Finally, apply a serum & moisturizer, customized to your skin's desires and needs.

Detox Reactions from the Oil Cleansing Method

Sometimes there is a short period of skin detoxification that occurs with the Oil Cleansing Method. As pores that have not been functioning well suddenly begin working efficiently, they desire to push out all of the debris that has been holding the skin back from its innate brilliance. It might even seem that your skin is becoming a little more oily at first. This is your skin cleansing, purging, and rebalancing. Allow the process to happen if it comes. It will not last long, and as you move through it, your skin will be transformed beyond anything it has ever known before!

Healing Scars Naturally and How to Get Rid of Acne Scars

Jill Stacey

Scars are the result of many potential causes. Today we're going to explore some common causes of scarring, and how to heal and regenerate scar tissue on the skin.

What Causes Scar Tissue

Scars are the result of the body's natural healing process. Any serious wound to the skin's dermis will most likely end up producing a scar. The degree of the injury's severity will determine how severe the scarring will be.

What is Scar Tissue

Scar tissue is made up of the very same collagen as the skin it is replacing. However, the composition of this collagen is different than that of normal skin. Uninjured tissue fibers (uninjured skin) exhibit a random basket-weave formation. But when scar tissue is forming, the collagen cross-links, and the tissue fibers take on a single-direction alignment.

Scars not only look less than optimal, but they also open us up to further injury to the skin. The collagen tissue alignment that typically results from scars does not function as well as normal collagen does. This leaves scars more susceptible to the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation. Also, sweat glands and hair follicles do not regenerate well within scar tissue. looks like its always best to heal scars as soon as possible!

Types of Scars

Acne Scars

You generally don't need to worry about blackheads, whiteheads and other types of non-inflamed blemishes causing scarring. It is the inflamed types of acne, such as papules, pustules, and cystic acne, that have a higher chance of leaving a mark long after the lesion has healed.

Cystic Acne

When a pore becomes plugged with bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells, it will swell up, causing a rupture in its inner-wall. If this happens deep beneath the surface of the skin, cystic acne will result. The very things that were causing the pore to become congested (bacteria, oil, dead skin cells) are released into the surrounding tissue, culminating in damage to the dermis. This sounds the alarm for the body to send in back-up to get the situation under control. However, once all is said and done, the new skin will form with those previously mentioned collagen fibers...the ones with an undesirable structure (the single direction alignment, not the healthy basket weave structure of healthy collagen). The result: acne scars.

Keloid Scars

With cystic acne, or any type of inflamed acne or wound to the dermis, the body can sometimes produce too much collagen as its healing. The result is what's known as a hypertrophic scar (or a keloid scar).

Atrophic Acne Scars

Acne most commonly causes a type of scarring known as atrophic scars. This is the type of scarring that results when there is a loss of tissue, leaving a depression in the surface of the skin.

C Section Scars

Aside from the scarring that can result from acne, there are many other potential causes to scars on the skin. One common scar that women experience are those left behind after a C-Section. Fortunately, like all scars, the marks from a C-Section can be softened and healed with natural remedies.

Homemade Face Mask

Jill Stacey

Making facial masks at home is a great way to pamper and nourish your beautiful self. The cold weather months can sometimes take their toll on the skin, so its a good idea to give your skin a little extra love and attention during this time. In this article, we'll look at some ways you can prepare a simple facial mask at home....and enjoy the reactivation of your wintertime glow-power!

How to Make a Face Mask at Home

We are going to take a look at some easy-to-find ingredients that can be combined to make healthy homemade face masks. You may already have these ingredients in your kitchen!

Face Mask Ingredients

In keeping with the spirit of the season, I am inspired by ingredients that bring moisture, calm irritations, work to restore and balance, and encourage delightful skin through their nutrient offerings. In keeping with simplicity, I want to be able to count all of the ingredients on one hand. So here is what we will be working with today: oatmeal, cinnamon, honey and turmeric.

Oats Nutrition

For some reason, chilly weather sometimes makes me think of oatmeal. This may have something to do with the wonderful little pots of steamed oats, dried fruits and cinnamon that my mom used to cook up for us on cold winter mornings. It felt deeply nourishing, I'm sure largely due to the abundant love with which it was offered. Having since become curious and passionate about nutrition, I discovered that oats have a lot to give.

Whether or not you choose to include grains in your diet, it is clear that oats are a great source of nutrition. You will find substantial amounts of manganese, molybdenum, phosphorous, copper, biotin, Vitamin B1, magnesium, chromium and zinc.

Oats are always a wonderful ingredient for skin care applications, which is what we will be exploring as we learn  how to create a homemade facial. Oats soothe and moisturize dry irritated skin as they deliver the aforementioned myriad of minerals. They absorb and remove surface impurities, along with acting as a gentle exfoliant and skin softener.

Benefits of Honey on Skin

Honey is one of nature's most magical miracles, so it doesn't surprise me to know how many amazing benefits it offers to the skin. Of course, you will always want to choose raw, organic, ethically harvested honey for the greatest benefits to you and the planet.

Raw honey is rich in enzymes, nutrients and minerals. The nutritional content and distinct characteristics of different honeys vary greatly depending on where they are harvested from. Typically, the darker the color, the richer the mineral content is.

Healthy honey brings an unmistakable glow to the complexion. It will help to heal acne (naturally antibacterial), assists in graceful aging (rich in antioxidants), and its humectant properties moisturize and soothe. Raw honey has a pH level of 4.5, making it a great match for our skin. It also features gluconic acid, which is a gentle alpha hydroxy acid that clarifies the pores, evens skin tone, and lightens scars, spots, and hyperpigmentation.

Turmeric Face Mask

Turmeric is famous for its anti-inflammatory properties, both internally and externally. Loaded with active antioxidants, turmeric is powerfully effective in keeping the skin young, bright and luminous.

With its vivid yellow color, turmeric can temporarily leave a very light golden hue on fair skin. However, this is a short-lived phenomenon that will fade within a few hours. That being said, you might prefer to use a facial with turmeric in it at night. Another option would be to obtain some Kasturi turmeric (curcuma aromatica). It is a much more difficult to find turmeric that is not edible (used only topically), and does not leave any temporary stain on the skin.

Benefits of Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a wonderful addition to facial masks, as it targets many common complaints. Cinnamon activates blood flow to the surface of the skin, and is anti-microbial. This makes it a great ingredient to assist in clearing all sorts of blemishes. Cinnamon also alleviates dry skin as it removes dead skin cells and oxygenates the tissues. These properties also help with the alleviation of fine lines.

Homemade Face Mask

Homemade facials, like the one we are about to make, are so simple and effective. They're also super convenient, when you consider that you probably already have all of the ingredients on hand. And if you don't happen to have everything available, you can always omit ingredients and add others in to suit your needs.

Alright, let's get to it...

Prior to applying your mask, its helpful to pre-cleanse your skin. You can use any gentle cleanser that you enjoy. Elaa's CLEANSING FAIRY DUST  and EFFERVESCENT FACIAL CLEANSER are both gentle balancing options. You might instead choose to do a facial steam for cleansing and opening the pores simultaneously. Using some customized essential oils, such as Elaa's WINTER REJUVENATION BLEND, in the steam can deepen the purifying and restorative properties. Click HERE for detailed instructions on how to pamper yourself with a steam facial.

After cleansing, gently pat the skin dry, and get ready to apply the mask. Some soothing music and vaporized essential oils of your liking are highly recommended at this point. Invite and encourage a relaxing space where you have the freedom to fully nurture yourself.

Now, its time to mix the mask...

Oatmeal Honey Turmeric Cinnamon Face Mask Recipe

1/2 c. organic gluten free oats, finely ground in a spice mill or blender

1 tsp. cinnamon powder (ceylon variety is a great choice)

1/2 tsp. turmeric powder

1 T. raw honey

warm water, as needed to form paste

Thoroughly mix together the dry ingredients (oats, cinnamon, turmeric).

Add about 2 T. of warm water to a bowl, and mix in honey. Stir until blended.

Add the liquid mixture to the dry ingredients until well incorporated, adding more warm water as needed to achieve a fairly thick paste.

Gently apply the mask to your face, and find a cozy place to relax for the next 20-30 minutes.

Rinse well and apply your favorite moisturizer.

How to Get Rid of Acne

Jill Stacey

Just about everyone seems to struggle with skin challenges of one kind or another at some point in their life. It may come early, at an older age, or anywhere in between. It may last for just a short while or it may be a longer term challenge. One thing is for certain: no matter what you may have already been through, or whatever it is you are currently dealing are not alone! I myself struggling with acne, psoriasis, rashes, eczema, and other skin conditions most of my life and have studied very carefully how to heal this skin conditions. We all have these types of experiences, and there is plenty of support available as you navigate through figuring it all out. I'm here to be that support for you.

For this post, I'd like to look at the most common of all skin conditions, acne. I'll discuss it's causes, and how to treat acne naturally.

skin problems, including acne, are opportunities for improving overall health

Skin problems are tricky in that they almost always signify an inner imbalance, and two people with identical looking skin troubles can have completely different causative factors. But once you are armed with the right information and action plan, there is no skin challenge that can't be conquered! It will require commitment and perseverance from you, but if you stick with it, your whole body will benefit from your hard work and dedication, and ultimately your health will increase in ways you may have not previously imagined possible!

acne vulgaris

Acne, otherwise known as acne vulgaris, is a most common skin complaint.

Sometimes it takes a pronounced cry for help from our bodies to alert us to an inner imbalance. Skin conditions are one of the most effective ways that our bodies can get our attention fast. After all, its hard to ignore an other-than-pretty pimple glaring back at us in the mirror. Acne is a trouble that most of us are familiar with, whether it has been experienced in mild or severe form.

what causes acne

Acne has many potential causative factors, but there are a handful of really common ones that are most likely at play. Things to reflect upon in your own life in relation to your acne are diet and nutrition, digestion and assimilation, toxic load in the body and cleansing, hormonal balance, medications that you may be taking, and stress and stored emotions.

treating from the inside-out

acne and diet

The food that we choose to bring into our bodies is a very personal choice, and can have a huge impact on acne and the overall quality of our skin. If you have an interest in nutrition, you have probably encountered an overwhelming number of well-intentioned people claiming to have all the answers to your own body's needs. Most of the time, these people appear to be preaching their own gospel, that is, making recommendations based on what is currently working for them. The bottom line is, our bodies are all unique, and we all have varying requirements at different times in our lives.

The key piece to take away here is this: listen to your body! Whether you have clear skin or are dealing with acne or any other skin condition, choose an organic whole foods diet tailored to your own needs. With an open mind, try out different approaches and see what feels best for you. Over time, you will discover how to tune in to your body and make the best choices. If you haven't done so already, eliminate any and all processed foods from your diet and replace with simple health-promoting real foods.

Here are some general recommendations for foods to avoid if you are in the process of clearing acne and encouraging outstanding health:

acne diet

foods to avoid

  • processed and chemical "foods" of all types

  • refined grain products and gluten containing grains

  • all refined sugars, and even natural sugars in excess (try to stick with primarily low-glycemic treats)

  • alcohol and caffeinated beverages

  • refined cooking oils

  • pasteurized dairy products

And here are some ideas for foods and superfoods you can incorporate in to your diet for health promotion:

foods for acne

  • Raw organic vegetable juices and fresh colorful veggies, consumed raw or cooked depending on personal constitution, digestion, and preference.

  • Nutrient dense wild foods, such as seaweed, herbs, and berries.

  • Superfoods

  • Warm healing broths. Bone broth is amazing for health and digestion. If you are vegan, try broths and soups with lots of veggies, roots, herbs, and medicinal mushrooms. Earth by HealthForce makes the perfect vegan, nutrient-dense broth.

  • Health promoting algaes, such as E3Live, Marine Phytoplankton and Chlorella.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids from foods and supplemental oils. Krill Oil is wonderful. The best vegan sources are E3LiveGolden Algae oilSprouted FlaxChia Seed, and Marine Phytoplankton.

  • Raw fermented foods, like sauerkraut and coconut water kefir

  • Healthy fats such as cold-pressed unrefined oils, especially coconut oil, avocados, and sun dried olives.

  • Herbs for the skin, such as elaa's own Clear Skin Tea

  • Fresh organic fruits in moderation (berries are an antioxidant rich low-glycemic choice)

If you are in need of a deeper level of support in designing and implementing a personalized dietary approach, I offer private health consultations via phone or email. CONTACT ME to find out more about a personal consultation.

stress and acne

Make no mistake about it: stress has a tremendous impact on our overall health. One of the fastest places it shows up is on the surface of our skin. Acne breakouts are a common experience for those experiencing high levels of stress. Discover and practice ways that you can relax and rejuvenate your being while, first addressing why you are stressed. Feeling all the feelings that arise when you dive into why you're stressed. Letting yourself express all of those feelings fully. And then, once fully felt, caring for yourself in nourishing ways.

hormonal acne

Hormone Imbalances can and will cause acne. There are many possible scenarios here, and it is important to know that any hormonal imbalance can trigger blemishes and breakouts. One example of this is seen when the body releases too many androgenic hormones (a common result of increased insulin production in the body). What follows is a cascade of excess sebum production, congested follicles, and in turn, acne formation. Another situation to be aware of is a sudden change in hormonal balance, such as that created by pregnancy or even certain illnesses. Also, an imbalanced estrogen to progesterone ratio in the body will often lead to breakouts before, during, or after menstruation. Talk to your naturopath or a practitioner you trust to help test your hormones and get them back into balance.

acne medications

There are certain medications that can actually trigger acne due to the imbalances that they create in the body. It is wise to hold an awareness of this possibility if you are taking any medications, and consider whether or not you may have other treatment options available that may be more beneficial to your long-term health. Contraceptive pills are a commonly used medication that creates body imbalances and can bring on breakouts. You will also want to steer clear of prescription acne medications for the same reason, and opt for a holistic acne treatment instead.

antibiotics for acne

While antibiotics are clearly a very useful tool in cases of serious medical need, it really makes no sense to use them as a long-term treatment for acne. We know that there is a clear link between acne and challenged digestive health. We are also aware of the fact that antibiotic usage further challenges digestive health, as it impacts healthy gastro-intestinal flora balance. By using antibiotics over extended periods of time in hopes of improving acne, you are actually setting up a cycle of increasing stress on one of acne's root causes, an imbalanced digestive system. This creates more harm than good for acne sufferers.

home remedies for acne

We've talked about some of the causes of acne, and also the importance of diet in improving and preventing future outbreaks. Now we're going to go deeper into some of the other ways you can take a proactive acne healing path, and begin deeply healing your body and clearing your skin!

detox for acne

When your internal body is overloaded with toxins that aren't being eliminated efficiently, the toxins begin eliminating through the skin....and this is when the skin issues arise! Look at it as a blessing: you are being alerted to the fact that your body is feeling overloaded with substances that are harmful to your health, and it is asking for your assistance in removing these accumulations. What an amazing opportunity for improving your overall level of health and vitality (and achieving clear skin in the process)!

Detoxing is an important way to help clean out your system and help get rid of acne. Look into fasting and cleansing programs. Consider colon hydrotherapy to assist in the removal of accumulated toxins. Get out there and move your body with regular exercise, if you can. Rebounding (bouncing on a mini trampoline) is an excellent way to move the lymph through your body. Regularly working up a sweat is great for the body, be it through exercise or a sauna (check out far infrared saunas for their powerful detox abilities).

liver cleanse for acne

The health of the skin is often a reflection of the liver's health status. Acne Vulgaris can be triggered by poor fat metabolism in the body (the process of digesting and assimilating dietary fats), of which the liver is largely responsible for. There are many approaches to cleansing the liver, some of which are more gentle than others.

Start with your water intake: make sure you are drinking ample amounts of pure, properly structured water (preferably fresh spring water, but do the best you can). Eat a diet of clean whole foods, with plenty of fresh produce, personally tailored to your constitution and health status. Use liver supporting herbs regularly, such as Liver Rescue by Healthforce and elaa's Clear Skin Tea

Coffee enemas are a highly effective way to cleanse the liver/gallbladder as well. These can be done easily in the comfort of your own home. Please note that if you are highly sensitive to caffeine, this may not be the best option for you. I personally love the benefits of coffee enemas, but cannot tolerate them. Give them a try and see how you do! Castor Oil Packs over the liver are one of my favorite and are an easy treatment - I do them every night. Another powerful Liver detoxifer is Rectal Ozone Insufflation, or Enemas with Ozonated Water, if you have access to an Ozone Generator.

supplements for acne

There are some highly valuable supplements that you might consider incorporating into your routine as you heal your acne and your body. Think about enhancing your digestive system function, supporting your liver, assisting in the removal of stored and released toxins, and strengthening your nutritional intake with super foods.

  • probiotics and digestive enzymes to support the digestive system. Friendly Force and Digestion Enhancement Enzymes.

  • MSM, taken with high quality, food-based, Truly Natural Vitamin C (vitamin C increases absorption of MSM, in addition to being great for the skin and immunity)

  • a liver support supplement containing milk thistle seed extract, such as Liver Rescue

  • green superfood powders, like Vitamineral Green, also by Healthforce

  • clays like Zeolite and bentonite for absorbing toxins daily

  • herbs like nettles and horsetail (rich in silica: a beauty mineral)

  • tonic herbs such as schizandra, reishi mushroom, and pearl powder, traditionally used to beautify the skin and bring balance to the entire body

  • elaa's Clear Skin Tea

treating from the outside-in

acne skin care

Adopting a healthy skin care routine will make a significant difference in your skin and overall health. Start by immediately eliminating all chemical acne treatments, like benzoyl peroxide, or any other “medicated” products from your life. These not only have a drying effect on the skin that is damaging, but the chemicals themselves are placing a heavier load of your body's ability to detoxify. Seek out natural products that are antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant without the toxic load.

essential oils for acne

There are many beneficial essential oils that can be added to carrier oils, skin care products, or applied neat (essential oils are highly concentrated: use caution before applying neat, or dilute first). Explore oils such as lavender, rosewood, eucalyptus, lemongrass, turmeric, geranium, grapefruit, sandalwood, vetiver, rosemary, niaouli, immortelle/helichrysum, thyme linalool, carrot seed, bergamot, chamomile, palmarosa, basil, and cedarwood.

elaa's clarity - anti-acne skin rejuvenating elixir oil and clarity nectar - blemish spot treatment are specially formulated to tackle topical troubles in the form of acne!

tree tea oil for acne

What about tea tree oil? While tea tree oil for acne is a common treatment, it's not my favorite because it can be very drying and cause the skin to peel. There are many other more gentle treatment options that are powerfully effective, such as elaa's clarity - anti-acne skin rejuvenating elixir oil and clarity nectar - blemish spot treatment

the healing path

While skin challenges are never any fun to deal with, adopting a positive perspective and accepting the blessings of natural healing opportunities will take you beyond the bounds of what you have previously known to be possible. Natural acne home treatments will clear your skin and increase your health. Healing is a process and it takes patience, but as long as you stick with it and keep moving forward, your efforts will be rewarded with true and lasting health.

How to Get Rid of Blackheads

Jill Stacey

Blackheads can be a pesky and persistent problem for many of us. The good news is that with a little understanding on the hows and whys of them, they can be a relatively simple fix.

Blackheads 101

In order to figure out how to forever eliminate blackheads from our lives, let's start with the basics... What exactly is a blackhead, and why is it sullying my complexion? The answers to these questions are pretty straightforward, and you will soon be empowered to banish these unpleasantries forever...

What are Blackheads?

Simply put, blackheads are nothing more than topless pimples... they lack a skin covering over their surface. The top layer of the clogged pore is exposed to air, which leads to oxidation at the site, and causes them to take on their black color.

What Causes Blackheads?

Blackheads are the result of the skin's pores becoming blocked. It is typically a mix of dead skin cells, bacteria and trapped sebum that is responsible for the clogged pore. One common misconception is that applying skin-drying products to blemishes (in the form of cleansers and spot treatments) is beneficial in the clearing of breakouts. This is an inaccurate assumption, and one that commonly causes even more skin troubles. You will want to steer clear of anything that further aggravates your skin, and products that over-dry definitely fall into this category.

Dry Skin and Acne

As it turns out, moisture balance is a pivotal piece of the blackhead puzzle, and having enough oil is important in our quest for clear skin. Pay close attention to the overall moisture levels of your skin. By using products that aim to dry out trouble spots, you could actually be setting up a cycle of excess oil production. Over-drying the skin triggers the sebaceous glands to produce lots of oil, usually too much. The key here is balance. We don't want to be too dry or too oily, but somewhere in the middle ground.

Blackhead Removal

The first step in parting ways with blackheads is to implement a strategic pore cleansing routine. This routine should be one that decongests the pores and removes built-up surface skin cells. It will never over-dry the skin, and will thoroughly clear away the accumulation of offending substances with use. It will also encourage normalization and balance of the sebum production, promoting healthy levels of oils in the skin. These steps are most efficiently achieved through proper exfoliation, using targeted clay masks, and balanced hydration.

When you pull a pore strip off, you to damage the first layer of your skin. This causes Broken Capillaries, which are permanent.  The strong pulling of your skin by the pore strips can also cause pre-mature wrinkles. The chemicals in the pore strip adhesive are also toxic and not safe for you or your skin.

How to Get Rid of Blackheads

When you exfoliate, you are removing whatever is present that's not serving your skin's highest good. You are ultimately going to achieve healthy pores that are free to move out congestion and maintain healthy sebum balance. Exfoliation in turn minimizes pore size, as they are no longer filled with inflammation-causing debris.

I have a special exfoliation process that I have developed for clear, glowing skin. It involves a two parts: First, I apply my unique AHA formulation Glow - Fruit AHA Exfoliating Dew, made with fruit Alpha Hydroxy Acids. Second, I apply my delicious scrub or "mechanical" exfoliant. The two types of exfoliants work together to most effectively clear skin and renew skin cells.

So, first cleanse with Effervescent Facial Cleanser or Cleansing Fairy Dust. Then, prime the skin with Glow - Exfoliating Fruit AHA Dew. Next, use Cacao Goji Berry Antioxidant Scrub - a delectable chocolatey, fruity, nutty scrub that polishes skin and infuses it with powerful antioxidants from superfoods.

Clay Masks

One of the most powerful ways to achieve both exfoliation and deep pore cleansing in one step is through the targeted use of natural clay masks. There are many different types of clay available to us, each with its own special properties. In terms of treating acne in all of its forms, including blackheads, Rhassoul Clay stands out high above the rest in its skin clearing powers.

Rhassoul Clay

Rhassoul Clay originates from ancient deposits within the mountains of Morocco. This special clay is incredibly pure and rich in the minerals magnesium, silica and calcium, all known for their promotion of skin health.

Rhassoul Clay benefits are many, and it works wonders at drawing out impurities lying deep within the pores. It is known in its abilities to promote skin clarity. Being a most effective acne treatment, Rhassoul Clay will eliminate blackheads and other forms of pore congestion. It both exfoliates and cleanses the skin, removing dead skin cells and reducing dryness and inflammation. It is also noted to firm the skin and improve its elasticity.

Deep Pore Cleansing Facial

The strategic use of targeted clay masks is an invaluable tool in clearing the complexion. Elaa is delighted to be able to offer Rhassoul Matcha Skin Clearing Detox Mask to you as a precious ally in attaining soft, clear and radiant skin.

Elderberry: SuperFruit of the Season for Natural Face Masks

Jill Stacey

Well, it seems that autumn is now officially in full swing in southern Oregon. In this part of the world, we are blessed with ample opportunities to get ourselves out into nature, and its the perfect time of year for doing just this... with an added benefit: wild harvesting! As the lushness of summer recedes into the earth, newly revealed treasures are showing up all over the place. The time is ripe to forage for an array of native foods and plant medicines, and recent harvesting adventures have proved quite abundant. This brings us to today’s featured super fruit of the plant world, one that we have been collecting eagerly so that we may enjoy and share its many benefits with you: Elderberry!

elderberry uses in traditional herbal medicine

The values of the Elder are known far and wide, being an extensively used medicinal in many cultures. As a matter of fact, it is said to be the oldest cultivated plant, respected and utilized by humans for thousands of years. It is most notably the berries and flowers that are used in preparations, as there are a myriad of special components contained within these pieces of the plant that are known to promote health and healing inside and out of the body.

power packed elderberry for health and skin beauty

The dark purple berries of the Elder plant are a striking display of beauty against fall’s backdrop. It is the extraordinarily high level of bioflavonoids contained within the fruits that provide this rich palette of color, along with some of elderberry’s most potent benefits. These gorgeous plant pigments are well known in their support of the immune system, and also for the antioxidant protection that they provide us with.

skin benefits of elderberry

The compounds of bioflavonoids are ready, willing, and able to defend your skin against stress, pollution, and even the shift in seasons.

Elderberries provide a number of different flavonoids, including quercetin, rutoside, hesperidin and anthocyanins (five times greater the amount found in blueberries). These natural antioxidant superstars are responsible for assisting in the removal of damaging free radicals from our bodies. They are anti-bacterial (useful for acne), anti-viral (useful for cold sore treatment), anti-allergic (useful for allergic rashes), and anti-inflammatory (take down inflammation). Research suggests that bioflavonoids prevent and reverse wrinkles, fight varicose veins and spider veins, and inhibit the development and reduce the appearance of age spots (thanks to the flavonoid hesperidin). We should also give a little shout out to quercetin at this point, as it is also known in its ability to increase the production of collagen, which is necessary in adequate amounts to achieve timeless skin.

These flavonoids are joined by substantial amounts of Vitamins A, B6, E and C, and along with the additional polyphenols and carotenoids present, elderberry has secured its spot as a healing, anti-aging and nutritional powerhouse. In the concentrated amounts that are present within the berries, these nutrients will deeply protect our cells against damage and delay the skin’s aging process.

If you’re looking to add some deep protection and nourishment to your strategic skin care as the air becomes brisk and dry, Elder is here to help!

elder flower

the delicate white flowers - elderflower benefits and uses

The ladies of the Victorian era were fond of the pretty things in life, and regularly employed the use of elder flower in their beauty routines. The flower water was used as a highly esteemed emollient, recognized in its ability to gently detoxify the skin. Its ability to maintain the skin’s youthful appearances by keeping it free from age spots and uneven skin tone is being rediscovered now by many lovers of natural beauty. Elder flower is an effective blood purifier and overall detoxifier, and is very well equipped to assist in clearing topical troubles such as acne, spots and rashes. Elder flower can soothe and bring relief to dry skin on the face when applied in the form of a natural face mask, toner, or targeted moisturizer. It has the ability to calm irritation and soften the skin, acts as a topical anti-inflammatory for upset skin conditions, will lighten freckles, and helps heal chapped skin.

an astringent for the skin - elderberry and flower to the rescue!

Both Elderberry and Elderflower have astringent properties, allowing the bioactive ingredients to penetrate through the pores, neutralize excess oils, and clear away impurities. Pore size is dramatically reduced, and the skin is toned. Elder specializes in complexion purification.
