How to Get Rid of Blackheads

Blackheads can be a pesky and persistent problem for many of us. The good news is that with a little understanding on the hows and whys of them, they can be a relatively simple fix.

Blackheads 101

In order to figure out how to forever eliminate blackheads from our lives, let's start with the basics... What exactly is a blackhead, and why is it sullying my complexion? The answers to these questions are pretty straightforward, and you will soon be empowered to banish these unpleasantries forever...

What are Blackheads?

Simply put, blackheads are nothing more than topless pimples... they lack a skin covering over their surface. The top layer of the clogged pore is exposed to air, which leads to oxidation at the site, and causes them to take on their black color.

What Causes Blackheads?

Blackheads are the result of the skin's pores becoming blocked. It is typically a mix of dead skin cells, bacteria and trapped sebum that is responsible for the clogged pore. One common misconception is that applying skin-drying products to blemishes (in the form of cleansers and spot treatments) is beneficial in the clearing of breakouts. This is an inaccurate assumption, and one that commonly causes even more skin troubles. You will want to steer clear of anything that further aggravates your skin, and products that over-dry definitely fall into this category.

Dry Skin and Acne

As it turns out, moisture balance is a pivotal piece of the blackhead puzzle, and having enough oil is important in our quest for clear skin. Pay close attention to the overall moisture levels of your skin. By using products that aim to dry out trouble spots, you could actually be setting up a cycle of excess oil production. Over-drying the skin triggers the sebaceous glands to produce lots of oil, usually too much. The key here is balance. We don't want to be too dry or too oily, but somewhere in the middle ground.

Blackhead Removal

The first step in parting ways with blackheads is to implement a strategic pore cleansing routine. This routine should be one that decongests the pores and removes built-up surface skin cells. It will never over-dry the skin, and will thoroughly clear away the accumulation of offending substances with use. It will also encourage normalization and balance of the sebum production, promoting healthy levels of oils in the skin. These steps are most efficiently achieved through proper exfoliation, using targeted clay masks, and balanced hydration.

WARNING - DO NOT USE PORE STRIPS!

When you pull a pore strip off, you to damage the first layer of your skin. This causes Broken Capillaries, which are permanent.  The strong pulling of your skin by the pore strips can also cause pre-mature wrinkles. The chemicals in the pore strip adhesive are also toxic and not safe for you or your skin.

Exfoliation

When you exfoliate, you are removing whatever is present that's not serving your skin's highest good. You are ultimately going to achieve healthy pores that are free to move out congestion and maintain healthy sebum balance. Exfoliation in turn minimizes pore size, as they are no longer filled with inflammation-causing debris.

I have a special exfoliation process that I have developed for clear, glowing skin. It involves a two parts: First, I apply my unique AHA formulation Glow - Fruit AHA Exfoliating Dew, made with fruit Alpha Hydroxy Acids. Second, I apply my delicious scrub or "mechanical" exfoliant. The two types of exfoliants work together to most effectively clear skin and renew skin cells.

So, first cleanse with Golden Sunrise Cleansing Cream. Then, prime the skin with Glow - Exfoliating Fruit AHA Dew. Next, use Pineapple Illuminating Microderm Polisher.

Clay Masks

One of the most powerful ways to achieve both exfoliation and deep pore cleansing in one step is through the targeted use of natural clay masks. There are many different types of clay available to us, each with its own special properties. In terms of treating acne in all of its forms, including blackheads, Rhassoul Clay stands out high above the rest in its skin clearing powers.
